Geoff Hill has stepped down from his role of news editor at ITV with immediate effect, following complications to his health.
Hill who was editor at the broadcast station for eight years made the announcement on Wednesday 30 September after he decided he must concentrate all of his energies on his health and family.
It is understood that Hill is fighting an ongoing battle with leukemia.
Under his tenure Hill the newsroom covered the general elections of 2015 and 2017, the Scottish referendum and the EU referendum of 2016.
Acting editor Rachel Corp will continue to oversee ITV News with an announcement on the next editor of ITV News to be made shortly.
ITN chief executive Anna Mallett said: “This is an extremely sad day for all of us here. Geoff is and always will be a huge part of the ITN family.
“He has been not just a journalist and leader of the highest caliber during his career with us, but also a much-admired friend and mentor to so many.”
She added: “ We will of course be offering Geoff as much support as he needs, and we are all looking forward to the day he is well enough to work again in the world of broadcast journalism that he loves so much.”
